SETTING THE THEME FOR THE EXPLORATION

To make this exploration exciting for the students we have come up with the following theme for it. The setting adds a comic as well as historic aspect to the exploration. Even though the following legend is a story, never the less, we feel that it will motivate the students and will allow you to dicscuss both the history of mathematics and the process of invention of activities and manipulatives with your students.

The Legend of Fitz D Pieces

Legend has it that Hammourabi the great king that ruled Babylon nearly 4,000 years ago had a beautiful Jade medallion encased in a gold casing. You can see a picture of it here.

One sad day Hammourabi dropped the medallion and it broke into 8 triangles. No one was ever able to put these triangles back together again and remake Fitz D Pieces. This was the name Hammourabi gave to the Medallion with the hope that some one will fit the pieces together and remake his medallion exactly as it was before.

Dr. Super rediscovered these triangles almost 4,000 years later in his excavations. He needs your help to study the triangles and put them back together to remake Fitz D Pieces and find out how much it is worth in our money today.
