2. Show Directions for Finding the Side Lengths of Dr. Super's Triangles. There are three statements on this page.
a. Statement 1 directs participants to remake Fitz D Pieces in such a way that the medium triangles cover the shaded areas on Fitz.
b. Statement 2 directs participants to assume that the long leg of the small triangle has length a and the short leg of the small triangle has length b.
c. Statement 3 directs participants to find the side lengths for all three of Dr. Super's Triangles in terms of a and b.
Note 1: Repeat the information in these statements orally and give participants several minutes for the task of recording the relationships in terms of a and b.
Note 2: Once the sides of the small, medium, and large triangle are labeled: a, b and c; a', b', and c'; and a", b", and c" respectively it is easy to point out that the side relationships can be expressed as shown as follows:
