In this talk, we provide definitions of virtual reality, highlight a few aspects of its history, and introduce a particular virtual reality environment, Iowa State University's C2. The C2 is a highly immersive, projection-based virtual reality environment, which uses 3D computer graphics, position tracking, and auditory feedback to immerse users into a 3D environment.
After a short overview on dynamic statistical graphics during the last 25 years, we explain how to use the C2 to explore new dynamic statistical graphics applications based on single, multiple, or sequences of 3-dimensional projections. Examples of statistical data in the C2 are the 3-dimensional grand tour and the linked brushing between a map and a 3-dimensional point cloud.
We finish this presentation with an overview on future directions of the use
of the C2 for dynamic statistical graphics.
