Student Awards and Honors In Statistical Sciences

The Department of Statistics and the Center for Computational Statistics provide a number of annual awards for graduate students.

Statistics Academic Achievement Award

This award is given annually to the graduating student with the best acedemic record as judged by the Department faculty. Grade point average is a major factor. This award consists of an engraved plaque and a $100 honorarium. The recipient of this award is recognized at the Convocation ceremony for the School of Information Technology and Engineering. Consideration is given to all M.S. in Statistical Science Graduates completing their work between July 1 of the prior year and May 30 of the present year.

The Washington Statistical Society Outstanding Graduate Student Award

This award is given annually by the Washington Statistical Society upon the nomination of the faculty of the Department of Statistics. It is awarded to a full-time student in either the Ph.D. or M.S. program majoring in statistical sciences. The student need not be graduating, but must have at least three semesters of work completed by the time the award is made. The award consists of a plaque, a certificate, and a one-year membership in the American Statistical Association and the Washington Statistical Society. Consideration is given to all full-time graduate students enrolled in the spring semester.

Statistics Chairman's Award for Academic Excellence

This award is given annually by the Department Chair for outstanding acedemic performance. The award consists of an engraved plaque and is presented at the annual department picnic. Consideration is given to all M.S. in Statistical Science Graduates completing their work between July 1 of the prior year and May 30 of the present year.

Center for Computational Statistics Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award

This award is made by the Center for Computational Statistics to the student defending a dissertation between July 1 of the prior year and June 30 of the present year. The dissertation may be completed in any Ph.D. program in George Mason University and is awarded for the best dissertation written on the theory, methodology, or application of statistical science and data analysis. This would include not only statistics dissertations written in the Ph.D. in Information Technology or the Ph.D. in Computational Sciences and Informatics programs, but dissertations in allied fields such as mathematics, probability, statistical signal processing, stochastic control, survey methodology, public policy and the like. The award is made based on the recommendations of a committee that reviews all nominated dissertations.

Center for Computational Statistics Outstanding M. S. Thesis


This award is made by the Center for Computational Statistics to the student completing a M. S. thesis in the M. S. in Statistical Science program between July 1 of the prior year and June 30 of the present year. The award is made based on the recommendations of a committee that reviews all nominated theses.
