CALL FOR PAPERS

The Caucus for Women in Statistics is sponsoring a contributed paper session around the theme

Exploring the Earth's Systems through Visualization and EDA

at Interface 2000, the 32nd Symposium on the Interface: Computing Science and Statistics to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana during the period April 5-7, 2000. The session reflects the theme of the symposium, "Modeling the Earth's Systems: Physical to Infrastructural."

Visualization and Exploratory Data Analysis are important in understanding complex systems, especially when there is no prior knowledge to guide distributional assumptions. Visualization has special significance in the context of the Earth's systems since they pertain to the physical world around us and the processes that drive it. EDA too, is well suited for exploring complex data sets that often arise in physical systems such as oceanography, astronomy and meteorology. The results of the EDA can be used to choose an appropriate modeling approach, including data partitioning strategies.

For links to data sources related to the earth's systems see Data.

Please send abstracts to Tamraparni Dasu by 2/10/2000. The abstract should be 200-250 words.
