Ed Hirschman M.S.
Ed is one of our legendary students. He holds more degrees by himself than most of our
statistics faculty put together. He is currently working on the Ph.D.

Duane King
Duane is a computer engineer for the Institute for Computational Sciences and
Informatics and also a Ph.D. student in that program. This picture is from about 1989.

Shan-Chuan (Sunny) Li
Shan-Chuan is known as Sunny to his friends in the statistics group because
of his cheerful disposition. He is a Ph.D. candidate in the CSI program working on a
wavelet approach to nonparametric density estimation. Sunny has a
research home page. This picture is taken
about 1993.

Qiang Luo
Qiang is a Ph.D. candidate
in the Information Technology program and also a full-time computer engineer for CSI.
Qiang works in the area of statistical graphics and visualization. This photo is from 1989.
Qiang is
often on the phone getting price quotes. In the virtual reality lab in 1995.
Qiang demonstrating that
his head is not empty.

Sameena Salvucci
Sameena is a Ph.D. student in information technology working on aspects of
random number generation and simulation with Jim Gentle as advisor. This picture is from
1993.

Ji Shen
Ji is a Ph.D. candidate in Information Technology working on a virtual reality
(immersive technology) approach to exploratory data analysis. We fear for Ji,
though, since he is currently out working in industry. He recently bought himself
a BMW and doesn't behave like most of our students. It's not wise to have a more
expensive car than your dissertation advisor. This picture about 1993.

Kwangsu Yang
Kwang Su is a Ph.D. candidate in Computational Science working with Dan Carr. Kwang
Su is very important to the Department for many reasons, not the least of which is that
he attends to the donuts and coffee for the weekly seminars. This picture is
from 1994.

Fan Zhang
Fan is shown here working as the editorial assistant for the Journal of
the American Statistical Association which he held for about a year
at the end of Dr. Wegman's editorship. He is a Ph.D. candidate in information technology
working with Dr. Bolstein in survey research. This photo is from 1993.
Here is a more recent picture of Fan from 1995.

Qi Zhu
Qi is one of our wonderfully cheerful Chinese students. She is a person
we can count on to be hard working and appears to enroll in all the difficult
courses.
