The Graduates Garage

Cajetan Aukujobi Ph.D.
Cajetan, shown here with his family, earned the Ph.D. in information technology. His dissertation focused on a comparison of wavelet and fractal methods for image processing information. He is currently employed at Schlumberger based Austin, TX

Celesta Ball Ph.D.
Celesta was one of our earliest Ph.D. level students. She is employed with MITRE where she works on issues related to air traffic control. Her dissertation was on the topic of path and confidence bounds estimation for aircaraft and other vehicles. She is shown here with Dr. Ed Wegman.

Masood Bolorforoush M.S.
Masood was one of the earliest students affiliated with the Center for Computational Statistics. He was instrumental in the earliest developments of Mason Hypergraphics and setting up our computational facilities. Here he is shown in the throes of a traditional Iranian dance.

Carolyn Carroll M.S.
Carolyn took the M.S. degree with us after having earned a doctoral degree elsewhere. She was an Army officer and has recently begun her own statistical consulting business.

Winston Chow Ph.D.
Winston earned the Ph.D. in information technology based on a dissertation which focused on stochastic differential equation models driven by fractal Brownian motion. He is employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Annemarie Clark M.S.
Annemarie graduated with the M.S. in Statistical Science. She is a hard worker and was seen often around the department. She is shown here in the Statistics Graduate Research Lab in May of 1995. She graduated in May, 1996.

Don Faxon Ph.D.
Don Faxon is a retired Army Officer who completed his Ph.D. dissertation in Information Technology. Don's area of research is on algorithms for nonparametric function estimation. Don has a home page which expresses some of his interests and experiences. This photo is from 1989. He graduated in the summer of 1996.

Leonard Hearne Ph.D.
Leonard currently has a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His dissertation in the information technology program was focused on high dimensional probability density estimation using random tessellations.

Ed Hirschman M.S.
Ed is one of our legendary students. He holds more degrees by himself than most of our statistics faculty put together. He is currently working on the Ph.D.

Charles Jones M.S.
Charlie Jones is shown here on the left with Jim Turtora and Barna Takacs at the 1994 Intel Supercomputer Users Group Meeting in San Diego. Charlie graduated with a M.S. in Statistical Science which he earned during a sabbatical from Grinnell College. Charles earned a Ph.D. from Dartmouth in 1978 and is currently an associate professor at Grinnell. You can visit his home page at Grinnell.

Another shot in San Diego with (from left to right) Jim Turtora, Charlie, Marilynn Livingston of the Intel Supercomputer Users Group, and Barna Takacs. The background is the sunset over the Pacific.

Hiroko Kawasaki M.S.
Hiroko is one of our very successful M.S. students. She came to us from Japan.

Duane King M.S.
Duane earned a M.S. in Computer Science. He wrote an M.S. thesis on the topic of automatic parallelization of FORTRAN code under the direction of Ed Wegman.

Duane King M.S. and Masood Bolorforoush M.S.
Shown (left to right) Duane King, Masood Bolorforoush and Ed Wegman. This picture is from 1993. Masood earned an M.S. in Statistical Science as well as an M.S. in Systems Engineering.

Hung Tri Le Ph.D.
Hung was one of the first seven graduates of the Ph.D. in Information Technology in 1989. Hung's dissertation was focused on the problem of transient signal detection and estimation. Hung was one of four individuals selected as an outstanding young electrical engineer nationally and was one of 33 finalists in the White House Fellows competition. This photo is from 1989.

Qiang Luo M.S.
Qiang can be found in several other rooms of the image gallery, but he is also a graduate with an M.S. in electrical engineering.

David Marchette Ph.D.
David earned the Ph.D. in Computational Science, graduating in summer, 1996. His dissertation was in the area of filtered kernel density estimators. His dissertation won the 1996 Outstanding Dissertation in Statistics. David is employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. David has a homepage.

Osama Morad Ph.D.
Osama earned the Ph.D. in information technology. His dissertation was focused on the development of a dynamic load balancing scheme for networks of workstations using queueing network models.

Wendy Poston Ph.D.
Wendy earned her Ph.D. in the Computational Science program under the direction of Ed Wegman. She is a 1995 graduate of that program and she, together with Jeff Solka, was one of the two original graduates from that program. She and Jeff shared the award for Oustanding Dissertation in the Statistical Sciences for 1995. Her work also won (jointly with Jeff) the NSWC outstanding independent research award. Wendy also teaches for CSI as an adjunct. This picture is from 1995.

Carey Priebe Ph.D.
Carey earned his Ph.D. in the Information Technology program under the direction of Ed Wegman. Carey completed his work in only two years and won the award for Outstanding Dissertation in the Statistical Sciences in 1993. This photo is from 1993 and shows Carey with Ed Wegman on left.

Carey in the Center for Computational Statistics library where he was often found. He is now a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University where he also has a home page. Before going to Johns Hopkins, he worked the NSWC, Dahlgren.

Another library portrait of Carey. During his tenure at GMU he was known for his long hair, moccasins, good humor, and brilliance. Presumably the latter two attributes more than made up for the former two attributes. Carey did with only modest coercion agree to wear a tie during his dissertation defense.

Mehrdad Saba M.S.
Mehrdad earned the M.S. in statistical science. An engaging personality, he was one of our earliest students in the M.S. program.

Ji Shen M.S.
Ji earned and M.S. in Statistical Science and continues as a Ph.D. candidate in the Information Technology program.

Jeffrey Solka Ph.D.
Jeff earned his Ph.D. in the Computational Science program under the direction of Ed Wegman. Everything said about Wendy Poston above can also be said about Jeff. They were known as the twins while they were students here. In fact, they were sitting on the couch next to each other when this picture and that of Wendy above were taken. They used to come in for advisory discussions on their dissertations together. Jeff, Wendy and Ed have now collaborated on a number of papers. Jeff almost has a home page.

Kelly Buchanan Thomas M.S.
Kelly was one of our top notch M.S. graduates. She is shown here in about 1990 in the lab space in our old facility in Science and Technology Building 1.

Shumei Wei Ph.D.
Shumei earned her Ph.D. in information technology working on noise reduction methods using wavelets with the idea of keeping edges and transients. In particular, she looked at the issue of distinguishing noise and texture. She is married to Qiang Luo and they have two very sweet children, Helen and Kevin Andrew. We also fear for Qiang since Shumei, Helen and Kevin are likely to finish their dissertations before him. This picture of Shumei is from 1995. Shumei has a most excellent home page.
